Bella ser inte fram emot att fira sin födelsedag- medan hon åldras för var dag som går, så kommer Edward för alltid vara 17 år. Det enda hon är det minsta glad över är att hon får fira dagen med honom och hans familj, men det slutade mer katastofalt än hon kunde ana..

""Shoot", I muttered when the paper sliced my finger, I pulled it out to examine the damage. A singel drop of blod oozed from the tiny cut.
It all happened very quickly then.
"No!" Edward roared. [...]

Efter den händelsen skulle det aldrig bli detsamma.

Edward har lämnat Bella- han ville inte ha henne, precis som hon alltid misstänkt. Flera månader går och dagarna känns som år. Hålet i hennes bröst blir bara större och gör ondare, tills den dagen hon träffar Jacob..
